The show debuted as a biweekly television program on CBS in 1968, hosted by Mike Wallace and Harry Reasoner.
The two occupied opposing sides of the set, which was originally cream but was eventually painted black, which is still the color used today.
The program highlighted its subjects using the chroma key during transitions, and both methods are being employed today.
The show started running in 1972 from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Eastern time, though on Sundays, NFL games would occasionally be televised during this period.
Since that time, the format of the show has largely remained Sunday evening. Today, the show typically kicks off at 7:00 p.m. Eastern.
If there is any afternoon sports programming, 60 Minutes begins at 7:30 p.m. Eastern or after the game.
Numerous correspondents present the program, however, none of them appear on-screen at the same time. Lesley Stahl, Scott Pelley, Bill Whitaker, and John Dickerson are the hosts that work full-time.
60 Minutes Format.
Three in-depth news items without visuals are shown on 60 Minutes.
A commercial break between the two stories. Each narrative is introduced using a set that looks like the pages of a magazine article on the same subject.
In addition to conducting its own investigations, the show also follows up on inquiries launched by major newspapers and other sources.
The 60 Minutes journalists never share the screen with other 60 Minutes journalists on camera at any time, unlike most conventional local and national news shows.
