He attended the 1988 Democratic National Convention in Atlanta after being chosen as a delegate from Rhode Island’s Congressional District 2.
Caprio was chosen to represent District 14 in the Rhode Island House of Representatives in 1990 while still a law student (Providence).
He served two terms as a state legislator, taking the train every morning to get to Boston schools and every afternoon to go to the legislature in Providence.
After serving in the Rhode Island Senate for the following 12 years, Caprio chaired the Senate Finance Committee from 2001 to 2002.
