Caprio worked as a dishwasher and a shoe shiner while going to Providence public schools.

He received his diploma from Central High School, where in 1953 he won the wrestling state championship. He graduated from Providence College with a bachelor’s degree.

After earning his degree, he started teaching the American government at Providence’s Hope High School. Caprio attended night classes at the Suffolk University School of Law in Boston while working as a teacher at Hope.

He eventually entered the legal field as a result. From 1954 until 1962, Caprio also served in the 876th Combat Engineer Battalion of the National Guard.

He served in the National Guard for a while, stationed at Fort Indiantown Gap in Pennsylvania and Camp Varnum in Narragansett, Rhode Island.
