DJ EFN Career and Songs.

DJ EFN started making mixtapes in Miami after becoming a fan of the tapes coming out of New York City. “There was no constant mixtape DJ in Miami, no one who ever actually played the music from Miami,” he remarked in an interview with Julia Beverly of Ozone magazine.

“Tony Touch and DJ Clue were both widely popular. Although the music was excellent, I didn’t want to hear references to Brooklyn or the Bronx. I wanted to support the local kitties by yelling out Miami.”

EFN released his first Crazy Hood mixtape in 1993. He created 42 volumes of the mixtape throughout the course of the following 20 years, with musicians including Outkast, Redman, Capone-N-Noreaga, KRS-One, Wu-Tang Clan, Bun B, Ja Rule, Sean Paul, Joe Budden, Lil Jon, Ghostface Killah, Keith Murray, and David Banner among those who appeared.

EFN created Miami’s Crazy Sounds Record Pool in 1997 (it functioned through 2007) and Hood DJs, an international alliance.

In 2002, DJ EFN was nominated the Best New Mixtape DJ at the 7th Annual Justo Awards. He won the Best Mixtape DJ honor at the inaugural Miami Urban Music Awards in 2003.

DJ EFN Album Projects.

Another Time by EFN was released in March 2015. The DJ has called it “a passion project,” noting that it is not a mixtape but rather an album of just original music.

It’s been a while since I’ve done this, but I’m going to try. In a Miami New Times article, Jacob Katel complimented the album for bringing together “the best underground talent in America with some of the genre’s godfathers to create an indelible masterpiece.”

EFN’s work on Another Time was praised for skillfully demonstrating that “the barriers and categories used to segregate MCs due to age, era, region, and style are self-inflicted” and was named one of “The 15 Greatest Hip-Hop Albums of 2015” by Ambrosia For Heads.

In 2010, EFN created EFN Visual Mixtapes in partnership with Miami-based Dre Films after realizing that the musicians he was working with required music videos to market their albums. The company then created films with “Mayday! Gunplay, N.O.R.E., Tech N9ne, Ras Kass, and Ras Kass.

EFN and Garcia created the Crazy Hood Film Academy in 2012, under which they made their first feature-length movie. “Coming Home,” a documentary on the Cuban hip-hop scene, won the Best Documentary prize at The People’s Film Festival in 2013.
